OVERVIEW
Rod & Custom was an monthly publication by Petersen Publishing which ended in 1974. Subsequently, the editorial
staff from Hot Rod continued to support street rodding with monthly
feature articles, project vehicles, how-to's and coverage of national street rod events. Numerous editors and staff kept the dream
alive to resurrect R&C at some future date.
In 1977, Lee Kelley along with Tom Medley and Senior V.P. Dick Day, agreed to resurrect Rod & Custom as a quarterly publication. Sales soon reached levels that the magazine enjoyed in its heyday, but then they declined and it was losing money again. Mr. Kelley, the catalyst to restart the publication, was also the one who recommended it be discontinued.
After 1980, Petersen published a series of quarterly magazines, Street Rod Quarterly in 1984 and 1985. But the dream to resurrect a monthly title never died. Rod & Custom was resurrected as a bi-monthly (later monthly) magazine in 1988.
