OVERVIEW
Rod & Custom was an monthly publication by Petersen Publishing which ended in 1974. Subsequently, the editorial staff from Hot Rod created a series of annual issues that covered the "best of" street rods of the era. This timeframe covers the peak of the street rod evolution before the smoothie look.

Note that there was still strong interest in these pre-1948 rods even though the general publishing trend was shifting to 1950s and 1960s muscle and performance cars.

After 1980 when this numbered series ended, Petersen continued to publish annuals with this title. But they were never numbered sequentially or externally. Although they were sometimes part of the Hot Rod Action Series, most often there was no reference to a publishing group or series. Then in 1988, Rod & Custom (Reborn) was resurrected as a monthly magazine, and that editorial staff then controlled annual publications.
