OVERVIEW:
Modified Magazine was started by Rob Laidlaw and his VerticalScope organization in Toronto, Canada. Content
focused on the sport compact and import car enthusiasts, and it had been a mainstay for the tuner culture since its inception.
Each issue included technical and how-to performance tuning articles, project cars, engine builds, and suspension, tire, wheel, and
other upgrades. It also included extensive event coverage and hundreds of photos. The long term editor was Peter Tarach.
OWNERSHIP:
Mr. Laidlaw was a proverbial "boy genius". He had already started a business in high school, and in 1999 -- at age 18 -- he left college
and moved to Toronto. He then created over 100 media properties in power sports, automotive and technology in rapid succession including
Modified Mustangs (2005) and
Modified Luxury & Exotics (2004).
Primedia's Enthusiast Media division purchased VerticalScope's Modified Automotive Group in February, 2007. A few months after the acquisition, the division sold numerous titles to Source Interlink Media for $1.2 billion. Modified continued on for several years but kept getting thinner and thinner in page count. Then they went from 12 to 9 issues per year, and the end was in sight. The title ended in 2014.
