OVERVIEW
Sports Car Pictorial was published by four friends in the Oakland, California area - John O'Donnell, Pete Biro, John Kelly, and Joe Cleary. They
functioned as the associate editors and were based in Oakland, California.
The initial impetus for starting the magazine was their inability to get or keep pit passes at races they were covering. They reasoned that with their own magazine, no one could take their pit passes away. Fred Amundrud provided coverage in Southern california while Milt Brown provided content from Europe.
The magazine was approximately 54 pages and was devoted to road racing, rallies and other events involving sports cars. It used the small, "trade" style format of 5-1/2" by 8".
The associate editors began supplying photographs to the Road & Track European editor for Formula One races. This expanded to the point where the team was also working for several Petersen publications and for Car and Driver. Eventually, the editors decided they didn't need their own magazine and sold the mailing list for $1.00 to Autoweek.
