OVERVIEW:
Car Buff magazine was published by David Steinbeck of Canton, Missouri. It was a 40 page, full-format title
primarily focused on pre-World War II cars and their owners. Where other magazines wrote content on the featured car, this title
provided more "home-spun" stories about the owners and how they acquired and/or restored their cars. Also included were early ads, general
information, letters from readers and classified ads. The magazine was clearly run by passionate car owners.
Work begain on the magazine in August, 1970, and the first issue was launched later that year. Published bi-monthly, it cost $1 per issue or $4.00 per year for a subscription. The editorial offices were located at Americanton Enterprises, and printing was done by Mo-Ill Printing in LaGrange, MO. It is unknown if newstand distribution was used, or if this was strictly a subscription-only magazine.
The publisher indicated in several issues that they were struggling to reach the break-even point with a suitable number of subscriptions. This condition likely explains its early demise. Plus there was competition from Car Classics and Special Interest Autos.
