Custom Vans was started by publisher Jack Pelzer as part of Twentieth Century Publications in North Hollywood, California. This magazine was part of the "van craze" that was first covered in Hot Rod magazine in the early 1970s. However, a slew of other titles emerged in the mid-1970s to cover this fad including Vans & Trucks, RV Van World, and Travelin' Vans. And like its competitors, it had equal parts content with both feature vans and how-to tips.
