OVERVIEW:
Street Rod Action's Fat Fendered Street Rods was generally a quarterly publication by Challenge Publications in Canoga Park, California. Challenge Publications
was owned by Edward Schnepf, and the company produced regular, recurring titles such as
Rod Action,
Street Rod Action,
Air Classics,
Sea Classics and other boating and airplane titles.
This title took the best content related to fat fendered cars and published them in this endeavor. Fat fendered cars were generally but not always Ford vehicles, but they always fell into the 1935 to 1948 timeline. Since this magazine was published during the time of the smoothie movement, the cars were usually painted in pastel colors and had the smooth styling treatment.
The title seems to have started as a Street Rod Action special edition for five issues, then it went to a quarterly publication with the last few issues on a bi-monthly print schedule. Volume and series numbering was confusing in the beginning.
Note that Challenge's last automotive publication was Street Rod Action which ended in 1998. So this featured title was printed near the end of the publisher's history with car related content.
