Custom Rodder - Magazine Covers - 1957 to 1965
Custom Rodder was an East coast, small format magazine published by Irwin Stein and his Magnum Publications organization at 47 East 44th St, New York. Larry T. Shaw was the first editor.
Irwin Stein was well known as a New York publisher and owner of Lancer Books. He published many genres, but was best known for science fiction, detective and heroic fantasies. Larry T. Shaw is well known as a science fiction writer.
The first issue was in May, 1957, and the last known publishing date was January 1965. It was a 68 page magazine and had good rod & custom content. Published monthly in the beginning, the publishers switched to every other month starting in March, 1963 at the same time they went to a larger format. The magazine was re-titled to Rodder & Super Stock magazine in March, 1965.
Note: volume and series numbering was erratic with this title due to poor quality control. Note the numbering errors in July, 1961 and January & February, 1962.
PUBLICATION DATA: Custom Rodder had five years of publisher provided print volume data, but the publisher submitted the same inflated net paid circulation numbers the last two years. So only three years of data are valid. The magzine stayed in the #8 position in 1961 to 1963.
NOTE: Other magazines used this title. The first ones were printed in 1974 (April & June) and again in 1979 (May and September). And the title was used again in the Fall, 1991 in Custom Rodder The Trendsetter, a hot rod magazine started by Tom McMullen with editor Jerry Weesner.
